Media freedom fight continues The fight for freedom of expression/speech and media freedom in South Africa continues unabated, with support from around the world and local politicians and various public debates adding to the pressure being applied to the ANC, which may just be starting to wilt a bit. But we must remember that what is called for here are rational debate and cool heads, as well as the passion of the heart, in this fight which impacts on our democracy.Bizcommunity.com is also thrilled to announced that our freelance journalist, the dedicated and highly talented Issa Sikiti da Silva, has won an award in the print category of the SADC Media 2010 Awards - I'm sure you all join us in wishing him congratulations! Meanwhile, the creative industry is gearing up for "the biggest event of the year": judging for the Loeries has been in full swing since 17 August 2010 and today, as a media partner, we've launched our own Loeries theme, which I'm sure you'll all appreciate. The Loeries judges seminar on Friday 20 August, held in a much larger venue, was a sell-out, packed with creatives of all ages and members of the media. This is the second time I've attended, and it's fascinating and inspiring to find out about advertising, communications and experiential work from around the world (this time Argentina, England, North Africa and the Middle East). It's like Design Indaba: you really have to be there to get the most benefit out of it. Lastly, keep an eye out for the launch this week of Bizcommunity and Sentient Communications' PRs Meet the Media, a regular series which will profile South Africa magazines and their editors so that both journalists and PROs can get more of what they both want: a little understanding, and a lot more focus. To media freedom and democracy! Simone Puterman (@SimoneBiz) Managing editor PS Reading these profiles doesn't mean you still don't need to pick up the magazine and read it before you pitch the editor! Please send all marketing and media news to marketingnews@bizcommunity.com and opinion pieces to contributors@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed in our online editor's column archive. Top stories
