Awards season continues

And awards season for the advertising and media industries continues to roll on. To mention but a few, recently in Johannesburg we've had the Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards, the SAPOA Property Journalist Awards, the inaugural Lilly MDR-TB Partnership/Red Cross Annual TB media award, the AdVantage AdMags and the inaugural MTN Radio Awards; we're in the middle of the Cannes Film Festival; and still to come are ADC and Clios in New York and Apex Awards in Johannesburg (go Trillion Dollar go!), CNN Multichoice African Journalists Awards in Uganda, D&AD in London, Cannes Lions in Cannes, the Diageo Africa Business Reporting Awards in London, 1st for Women Insurance Women in The Media Awards in Joburg. And there's still the Loeries and Pendoring awards to come later on in the year, not to mention the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards!

Bizcommunity.com congratulates all the winners but, as Marion Scher blogs today, beware of the Internet - it's not as big a world as you think. Don't plagiarise; you will be caught out.

Once again, Johanna McDowell of the Independent Agency Search and Selection Company will be blogging exclusively for Bizcommunity, this time from the AdForum World Summit in Copenhagen, so look out for her posts this week.

Twenty four days and counting until kickoff (pesky @theashcloud, stay away)!
Simone Puterman (@SimoneBiz)

PS In this week's Ornico Ad Showcase, we feature TV ads for Danone Delight, Clorets Eliminator, Nissan Qashqai, Virgin Money and Nando's, and radio ads for Listerine, FNB, TopTV, Wimpy and Renault.

Please send all marketing and media news to marketingnews@bizcommunity.com and opinion pieces to contributors@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed in our online editor's column archive.

A new PricewaterhouseCoopers reports finds that wealth comes second to location and tradition when projecting World Cup winners.
Swedish broadcaster finds a hero   TV
Broadcasters that rely on a license subscription for income are often backed by legislation that requires anyone who owns a television set to pay a fee. Hence TV license advertising tends to be very authoritative in tone, and often focuses on the consequences that face anyone who evades payment. Sweden's Radiotjänst took a different route with their Hero campaign.

The talented Mr Brady does it all   THEATRE
[Ilva Pieterse] Entertainer Wayne Brady has returned to South Africa to once again share his 'Making it Up' improvisation show with South African audiences. Meeting with him shortly after his arrival early this week was an extraordinarily inspirational experience for me. Here is what he had to say.
Flying the Black Flag   THEATRE
[Patricia Pieterse] The three terms I would use to describe Henry Rollins' sense of humour would be political, sometimes self-deprecating and eloquent. The former Black Flag vocalist performed his show, Frequent Flyer, in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town recently. This was his second trip to SA, but his first time in Pretoria.
From Parow to Paarl - It's Jack Parow!   MUSIC
[Natalie Jardine] I'm obsessed with music from Byellville, but the 'burbs ain't exactly my favourite hanging spot, especially on a school night. So it took a whole lot to get me to mission to Willowbridge (Oooo! A step up from Tyger Valley!) and the Barnyard Theatre, of all places. But, as the event was the official launch of Jack Parow's first full-length album, I had to make the exception. Trust me, it was sooo worth it.
Spandau Ballet and Alphaville, greatest of the 80s?   MUSIC
[Alan Hughes] I recently had the opportunity to go to see Spandau Ballet and Alphaville at the Grand West Arena. When I arrived, DJs from Heart 104.9 FM were playing great hits from the 1980s and warming up the crowd with humourous banter. They hailed these two bands as being the greatest of the 80s, which seemed a little over the top. Maybe they are the best bands of the 80s who are still making music - and who are prepared to include South Africa in their tour?
