All roads lead to Clarens Happy birthday, MINI! This past weekend, MINI celebrated 50 years of cool with the help of VWV in the picturesque arty mountain village of Clarens in the Free State, with hundreds of MINIacs and their MINIs, both old and new, partying up a storm. [And forget Sun City, Margate and Cape Town - we can just imagine the Loeries being hosted there!] Also cool is SAB, which has enlisted the services of Vanilla Ice (come on, you remember him, don't you?) to chill fans of their beers by performing a reprise of his number one hit single from the '90s, Ice Ice Baby. On a much less cool note, the SABC is back in the wars. Or more accurately, it doesn't seem to be out of them these days. Observers are hoping for quick and appropriate results regarding the incompetents, the thieves and the looters as the SABC begins its long walk to 'financial justice', though it has other problems as well, since, by cutting local production, the broadcaster might also be violating ICASA regulations governing local content. Here's to another 50 years of cool! Simone Puterman & Rod BakerPS In this week's Ornico Ad Showcase, we feature TV ads for FNB, IDC, GoodYear, Medal Paint and Castle Lite, and radio ads for Business Connexion, CTM, Mango, Mowaly and Musica. Times and Sowetan Retail Awards 2009 More   [Ilva Pieterse] Saturday's intermittent rainstorms did little to deter music lovers from enjoying and supporting their favourite local acts at this year's Joburg Day festival held on Riversands Farm in Fourways on 17 October 2009. This annual music extravaganza featured 14 local performers from a wide range of genres.
[Sindy Peters] Sunday, 22 November 2009 sees the official kick-off of the Old Mutual Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert Series for 2009/2010. Every Sunday, from the end of November 2009 to the beginning of April 2010, the best of the best SA musicians will take stage at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town.
[Marcello-Calvin Adams] The John Legend concert, held at Cape Town's Grand West Casino last night, 15 October 2009 was definitely one for the books. His opening act, Keri Hilson, was not too bad either, in her gold-and-black get-up (wonder if she bought it at Cavendish?). But the aptly named John Legend really was the star. His Ordinary People, Save Room and, my personal favourite, Everybody Knows rocked the proverbial house. His backdrop was awesome, or I should say legendary.
[Sindy Peters] Survivor SA I and II didn't quite make the grade in a country that is brimming with reality TV fanatics. But we're such a colourful bunch, so I don't understand why the shows lacked intrigue, drama and appeal. Well M-Net's taking a third swing at it by shooting a Survivor series featuring SA celebs as contestants. And it's no secret that South Africans thrive on celeb gossip - ask any respectable tabloid or celebrity gossip/entertainment magazine.
Synergy Live is a three-day, summer outdoor music festival from 27 - 29 November 2009 at the historic and beautiful Boschendal Wine Estate in the heart of the Franschoek Winelands. It's a weekend of camping out, surrounded by mountains and immersed in the sounds of 60 top South African bands, live acts and electro artists.
[Sindy Peters] So much to see and so much to do, yet so little time. Yes, three days wasn't nearly enough time to juggle watching bands play, comedy, window shopping, art gazing, wine tasting, and partying with soaking up some glorious sunshine along the Cloof Wine Estate dam reservoir before taking a quick dip and heading off for a massage and manicure.
[Sindy Peters] Another romcom following closely on the heels of The Proposal is The Ugly Truth. They're pretty much based on the same concept of now you hate him/her, now you don't - it's a formula used over and over again and it's a tired one. Instead of wasting hard-earned bucks on taking your partner out to see this crud, go see something more stimulating like UP - and that's about it, because everything else running on circuit right now just about makes it beyond B grade.
The big winners at the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain were Nameless (Kenya) and M.I. (Nigeria), each of whom took two trophies at the awards, held at the Moi International Sports Complex, Kasarani, Kenya on 10 October 2009.
Pepe Jeans will continue to sponsor the Renault F1 Team to the end of the 2009 season, as per the two-year sponsorship deal signed in January 2008, the company has announced.
[Debbie Hathway] Sean Bovim's SwingTime, on at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town until 18 October 2009, comes on the back of his hit show Tango Nights, which was so popular that many people saw it more than once. It set a precedent.
