Joburg rocksWhereas the Mother City was pretty quiet this weekend - probably recovering from The Loeries - Joburg was clearly in a party mood, what with Sexpo, Taste of Joburg, Rocking the Gardens, Joburg Pride, and more on the go. Meanwhile, the SABC issued a statement on the meeting it had with the ANC Youth League; the latter apparently eager that when soccer fans arrive for 2010, they will get a good dose of exposure to local music. All in all, therefore, it should be a pretty loud visit - what with kwaito et al, and vuvuzelas. Cheers, Rod BakerPS In this week's Ornico Ad Showcase, we feature TV ads for Royal Baking Powder, Chevrolet Cruze, Liqui Fruit, Audi R8 and BMW, and radio ads for Jacobs, M-Web, Nu Metro, Flanagan's and Timberland. [Loeries 2009] Giant Films lunch at The Grand More    The three finalists to play on the main stage at Rocking the Daisies 2009, as voted by the fans are She Man Lion, Sean Hayz Band and Jinx. [Kershin Padayachee] By ‘Old school', I am referring not to a style of music, but rather to an era when musicians were held in high regard for the immense quality of music which they produced. Have you noticed that many bands out there are sticking to the same key, same song structure, and same worn-out lyrics, blasted over the airwaves to near distortion. Sure there are some killer bands out there that are constantly changing the face of the music and I can certainly name quite a few. But there comes a time in a man's life when his soul craves for something different, yet vaguely familiar from an era thought to have long gone. You have to ask yourself ‘Whatcha gonna do?'
[Kershin Padayachee] Finally, some decent gigs are taking place in my neck of the woods. And so, last Wednesday night, with the next day being National Braai day, I found that I had no excuse, but to partake in the festivities and check out the local talent at Stones in Table View. Fortunately for a late-bird such as myself, gigs never start when expected. This gave me enough time to grab a drink and chat to some of the line-up before the show kicked off.
[Sindy Peters] The Red Bull RADAR competition will, in roughly two weeks, reach its climax when the winning band/artist will record a four-track demo at the Red Bull Studio in Cape Town, with return flights paid for, along with accommodation and meals. They'll also win a slot at Rocking the Daisies 2010.
