If there was ever an argument for summer time, Cape Town would be it with the cold wet rainy weather this morning and total darkness at 7.30am! Media takes centre stage this week – from the launch of Al Jazeera into Africa last Thursday, 31 May 2007 and the new African business channel CNBC Africa which launched Friday night, 1 June, to Sunday with the launch of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) 60th annual congress and the 14th World Editors Forum (WEF) – it’s going to be an auspicious week for the media. Over 1600 local and international editors and publishers are gathered in Cape Town for WAN/WEF which is probably the biggest media gathering for an event of this nature in South Africa to date. President Thabo Mbeki is due to speak at the official opening this morning, although editors from around the globe caucused with their local colleagues on various issues of debate on Sunday. See our reports below. Bizcommunity.com will bring our readers all the news from WAN and WEF this week with myself and Chris Moerdyk on the ground. We will also be trialing our first news blog (http://blog.bizcommunity.com) and videos from the event this week, assisted by Zoopy, South Africa’s own video and photo sharing portal (www.zoopy.com/bizcommunity). It’s been a hugely exciting journey to get to this point and we have to thank the South African blogging community and media personalities who are leading online innovation for their continued advice and support to our team.

    Web crawlers threaten sustainability
[Lynne Smit] The opportunities for newspapers in the digital age are huge – it's just a matter of finding the best way to harness them, delegates at the Digital Media Roundtable were told Sunday, 3 June 2007. This is despite the fact that web crawlers – the search engines' content robots which grab content in an uncontrolled way – threaten sustainability.

    Media freedom in Africa spotlighted
Media freedom in Africa was caught between ‘the hammer of the state and the anvil of the market', Zambian media analyst Fackson Banda told delegates on the first day of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) conference and World Editor's Forum (WEF) which started in Cape Town, Sunday, 3 June 2007.

    Young readers trust newspapers
[Winnie Graham] Young readers trust newspapers more than other news sources. This was revealed at a Round Table on Youth Readership at the WAN conference in Cape Town, Sunday, 3 June 2007, when Dr Robert Barnard, an international media researcher, opened discussion on “winning strategies for engaging a new generation”.

    Murders, repression characterise press dangers
Nearly 60 journalists have been murdered in the past months, and prosecution of journalists for “treason” and “extremism” are on the rise, according to the annual half-year review of press freedom by the World Association of Newspapers. The report, presented Saturday, 2 June 2007, to the Board of the Paris-based WAN on the eve of the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum in Cape Town, South Africa, painted a grim picture of attacks, imprisonment and murder facing journalists in many countries.

World press descend upon Cape Town
An impressive 1600 delegates from no less than 105 countries descend upon the Mother City later this week for the African continent's inaugural hosting of the World Association of Newspapers Congress and World Editors Forum. This global meeting of the world's press, taking place between Sunday 3 and Wednesday 6 June 2007, has been noted by WAN spokesperson Larry Kilman as the second largest in WAN history after last year's Moscow-hosted congress.

    WAN award highlights press freedom
A Chinese journalist languishing in jail will be awarded the Golden Pen of Freedom Award at this year's World Association of Newspapers (WAN) Congress to be held in Cape Town next week, 3 – 6 June 2007 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. It is the first time that the WAN Congress will be held on the African continent and it is hoped that the award will draw attention to an issue which is so often disregarded by African governments.

WAN congress to tackle newspaper 'threats'
The question of readership is of concern to publishers and editors around the world and when the World Association of Newspapers meets in Cape Town for the 60th annual newspaper conference next week, 3 – 6 June 2007, it will be looking at the future of newspapers – and the various elements that affect circulation.

    New media's marketing opportunities
[Harry Trisos] The recent ‘Mobile and Web New Media Marketing Conference' organised by IQPC in Johannesburg gave delegates an opportunity to assess the marketing strategies that they have to adopt for this exciting challenge that faces all businesses and brands today. I would like to highlight three out of the many valuable points that were made.

JD Group shows its marketing mettle
[Chris Moerdyk] Up until now, corporate South Africa has been way behind modern marketing trends in terms of how to react to public criticism. Standard procedure has always been to get hot under the collar, go into a complete panic and then flatly deny everything. But, it seems the JD Group's David Sussman has clearly been keeping up to date with marketing best practice, judging by his response to recent criticism of his company on M-Net's Carte Blanche.
