Two and a half years ago at the World Print Congress in Cape Town, where printers and publishers discussed the future of print as a medium and threats and opportunities, the chairman of a global newspaper group spoke about TV and radio as being the biggest threat to newspaper sustainability. He didn’t mention the Internet or any other multimedia development, which I thought was short-sighted to put it mildly, but not surprising, given that newspapers seemed to be the medium which found it hardest to embrace new technologies. That has changed radically in the past year or so with newsrooms integrating print and online operations globally, some more successfully than others. The World Association of Newspapers’ 60th annual congress, which begins in Cape Town on Sunday, is a highlight on our industry calendar this year and looks at the disintegration of the print and digital ‘divide’ and how new business models are emerging for newspapers. With media such as Sky News pioneering interactive TV by launching their virtual newsroom this weekend on Second Life, and citizen journalists (bloggers) often first with the news in techni-colour these days, newspapers have to continually innovate to reclaim their role as the cornerstone of press freedom. And thanks to my 2IC, Simone Puterman, for keeping the news coming while I was on leave for the past two weeks.

    The World Association of Newspapers Congress in Cape Town next month offers a “fantastic opportunity” for Brand South Africa to show the world what it has achieved, according to the CEO of the International Marketing Council, Yvonne Johnstone. “The eyes of the world are on us, not just because of the 2010 World Cup,” she said.

    Chicken Licken CEO flies off as inaugural Marketer of the Year
    The founder and CEO of Chicken Licken, George Sombonos, was crowned Creative Circle's Marketer of the Year at this week's Financial Mail Adfocus Awards.     SA scores four D&AD Yellow Pencils
    LONDON: At the D&AD Global Awards 2007 last week in London, South Africa received four of the 59 Yellow Pencils, awarded from 151 nominated entries. Graphic Design and Viral juries awarded the most, with seven Pencils handed out in each. An illustration and, for the second year running, a website, were awarded the only two Black Pencils.

    D&AD Yellow Pencil for TBWA's Tsotsi
    LONDON: TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris was awarded a Yellow Pencil at the prestigious D&AD awards last week in London for its Tsotsi Safact Anti-Piracy campaign. “This is great for South Africa,” says Damon Stapleton, executive creative director for TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris in London this morning. “It shows that South Africa is producing great work and being rewarded on an international scale and standard.”


    MediaCompete new MTN media agency
    MTN SA announced on Friday, 25 May 2007, that MediaCompete has been awarded the MTN SA media strategy, implementation and buying contract, following a competitive pitch process. The three-year contract commences on 1 June 2007.

    ACA CEO resigns
    The Association for Communication and Advertising (ACA) chairman, Reinher Behrens, announced yesterday, Wednesday, 23 May 2007, that CEO Zandile Nzalo will be departing from the association in August 2007. Nzalo, who will be leaving after serving two years out of her three-year contract, has indicated that she wants to return to business to pursue new ventures.

    Universal McCann: Media Agency of the Year
    Universal McCann was named Media Agency of the Year 2007 at the annual Financial Mail AdFocus Awards ceremony held earlier this week. The accolade is a direct result of the agency's massive turnaround in 2006.

    Jupiter takes Agency of the Year
    At the 2007 Financial Mail AdFocus Awards, held in association with the SABC earlier this week, The Jupiter Drawing Room Johannesburg was crowned Agency of the Year, TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris walked off with the Roger Garlick Innovation Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Graham Warsop.

    A Groovy Young Operative of the Year
    The Financial Mail AdFocus awarded the champion of the Leo Burnett Group, Groovin Nchabaleng, with the 2007 Young Ad Operative of the Year earlier this week at a black tie event at the Sandton Convention Centre. This follows hot on the heels of his being recently crowned 2007 AdReview Advertising Person of the Year.


    First advertising school for Soweto
    [Issa Sikiti da Silva] A total of 32 young matriculants – 13 girls and 19 boys – have been enrolled for a one-year advertising course at the Funda Community College, near Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Johannesburg. The ‘Imagination Lab' initiative, a project of Vega School and Café (Communications and Advertising Forum for Empowerment), launched its Soweto branch last week Friday, 18 May 2007, in Orlando.

    Countdown to first CNBC Africa broadcast

    Patricia de Lille has put out a press release calling for the government to 'regulate' Internet blogging and MXit. The feasability of such 'regulation' aside - this smacks of censorship to me. It's interesting that the leader of an opposition party, and famed whistle blower, would advocate censorship - but what is more interesting is that this debate polarises two distinct values - people's right to free speech versus how we as a country/ nation/ globe protect children. Big questions... Will the elimination of new communications technologies really ensure better protected children? What is your view?
