Can we have an open, honest discussion about what designers REALLY earn?
I'd like to start an open and honest discussion about salaries for graphic designers in SA (including Art & Creative Directors). We are encouraged not to discuss salaries but the discrepancies between what we are told we SHOULD be earning and what we are ACTUALLY earning seem vast, especially as a Durban designer viewing Jo'burg and Cape Town salaries.
I am a white, female currently working as an Art Director in Durban in with 10 years experience and have a great portfolio of print and digital media. I clear just over R10k, with minimum benefits.
Please can you submit (anonymously) an unbiased, honest opinion (preferably with what you clear) on wether this is a market related salary, or if if us designers are being exploited.
Secondly, we are expected to work long hours without overtime/time off with little or no appreciation - is this standard? Should we accept it?
Please, can we keep this constructive. Thanks for your input.
