Social Investment Programme with a conscience
I had argued before that though noble as it may be the Take a Girl Child campaign may be a good strategy to address the ills of the past discrimination against our fairer sex partners but blindly creating a foundation for another cruel social injustice.
After watching a video created Cell's C creative agency VWV I am pleased that at last the strategy has seen the light for the future.
This justified bias against boy children was the recipe for social upheavals. Scores of boys were not becoming demotivated into taking studying seriously and aspiring to make career choices.
When the corporate world was opening its arms to Girl Children after buying into Cell C's strategy , dishing spoils of not only the promotional material in a form of bags and goodies but also the crucial exposure to various careers, despondency was simmering among the boys.
This is evident in the results of school performances between boys and girls at Matric level. The ratio is 4: 1 success in academic performance in favour of girls. What we as the society would make of the 3 boys (for every girl) who do not have a future because we prioritised on girls.
Looking at the society we are creating long term where would those boys be when the girls we offered opportunities at their expense be. It is a social evil that when scrutinized philosophically is the same turmoil that we are facing today : crime.
Surely the 3 unfortunate boys will have to make a living. They will crave the ambitions of becoming husbands and respected citizens that the society did not afford to create for them. How else do we expect them to survive in future?
Without idolizing crime it is their only hope unless we start creating foundations of a just and equal society. The strategy may have been the myopic way out that we thought was perfect in addressing the sins of the past. What of the future ?
Thumbs up for Cell C's strategy now that it is geared towards addressing the needy school children in terms of career development instead of promoting a bunch based on gender! WE can proudly say it is a strategy with a consicience. Crime has not future at last!
