Sony World Photography Awards

For the past three years, the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography has had at least one finalist in the student category of the Sony World Photography Awards. Student finalists each receive the latest Sony Alpha series camera, are flown to London for the award ceremony and workshops with the judges. In addition, their work features in the main Sony World Photography Organisation Awards Exhibition at Somerset House and in the official catalogue.

The Student Focus competition is one of the world’s leading programmes for photography students. Anyone undertaking a full-time photography course can take part. Each year all registered universities are provided with a unique first challenge together with a time frame for their students to submit a single image. A shortlist of 10 students are then selected and given a second and final challenge.

“Each year, we aspire to achieve a high calibre of work from our students and this is the best and most satisfying acknowledgement we could ask for”, said Mark Antonello, subject head of Photography at the Academy. He added that the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography strived to develop and expose their photography students to the highest quality talent and expertise in the industry and that the Sony World Photography Awards Student Focus section represented this for the students.

The Academy is proud of the following students:

2014 - Tarra Mette
2015 - Jannah Ruthven
2016 - Rochelle De Abreu.

The Academy is honoured to represent the young emerging talent from South Africa, as well as, being part of the industry’s leading global contest celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2017!
