Food and beverage income lifts 7.2% y/y

Total income generated by SA's food and beverages industry lifted 7.2% in September from the same period a year ago, with food sales up 8.6% alone, according to Statistics SA data on Monday, 21 November.

The major contributors were takeaway and fast-food outlets (15.8%), followed by restaurants and coffee shops (3.9%) and catering services (4.1%).

Total income from food sales was reported to be R9.1 billion in the third quarter, while food sales in September clocked in at R2.9 billion. Total food and beverage income in September was R3.4 billion.
