SA Aug food and beverage income up 3.4% y/y

The total income generated by the South African food and beverages industry for August 2011 was 3.4% higher than for August 2010, data released by Stats SA on Monday, 24 October, shows.

The contributors to this increase were food sales (2.5% and contributing 2.2 percentage points) and bar sales (11.0 and contributing 1.3 percentage points).

Stats SA noted that the main contributor to the positive annual growth rate of 3.4% in total income for August was takeaway and fast-food outlets (10.8% and contributing 3.0 percentage points), followed by restaurants and coffee shops (1.0% and contributing 0.6 of a percentage point).

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry for the three months ended August 2011 increased by 2.2% compared with the three months ended August 2010. The main contributor was food sales (2.2% and contributing 1.9 percentage points), followed by bar sales (4.3% and contributing 0.5 of a percentage point).

The year-on-year increase in total income for the three months ended August 2011 was driven mainly by takeaway and fast-food outlets (10.6% and contributing 2.9 percentage points). This increase was to a certain extent counteracted by the marginal decrease in restaurants and coffee shops (-1.5% and contributing -0.8 of a percentage point).
