UK ruling a victory for VoIP

Voice over Internet protocol service Truphone's recent legal victory over telecommunications giant T-Mobile is a milestone for VoIP technology globally, according to South African mobile VoIP operator Yeigo Communications' Rapelang Rabana.

In the court battle, the VoIP provider accused T-Mobile of hindering its service by blocking calls made to numbers owned by the mobile operator. The British High Court granted an injunction against T-Mobile, forcing it to put all VoIP calls through.

“This victory over T-Mobile has set a precedent for VoIP services. We will now see greater belief in the innovative service provided, and an even larger influx of international clientele subscribing to VoIP technology,” comments Rabana.

“VoIP calls are most certainly cheaper, especially with regards to international communication. Calls to other networks, landlines and international destinations are up to 80% cheaper than generic cellphone rates, while SMS messages are as much as 90% cheaper – it's no wonder network providers are starting to feel somewhat threatened by the VoIP presence in the market.”
