South African retail sales grow 2.1% in September

Stats SA reports that South Africa's retail trade sales increased by 2.1% year-on-year in September 2021.

The largest annual growth rates were recorded for retailers in: textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (11.3%); and pharmaceuticals and medical goods, cosmetics and toiletries (10.4%).

The main contributor to this increase was retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (contributing 1.6 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted retail trade sales increased by 5.1% in September 2021 compared with August 2021. This followed month-on-month changes of 4.9% in August 2021 and -11.2% in July 2021. In the third quarter of 2021, seasonally adjusted retail trade sales decreased by 5.4% compared with the second quarter of 2021.

Retail trade sales decreased by 0.2% in the third quarter of 2021 compared with the third quarter of 2020. The main negative contributors to this decrease were: general dealers (-1.9% and contributing -0.8 of a percentage point); and retailers in hardware, paint and glass (-5.0% and contributing -0.5 of a percentage point).

The main positive contributor was retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (7.0% and contributing 1.0 percentage point).
