Nine weeks down the line, Melanie Walter, Starcom's media director who has been keeping an eye on the reality show, concluded that the ratings are erratic, with no consistent growth as the programme develops.
In reply, M-Net says that in terms of episodes 1 - 11, Idols III in 2005 averaged 4.6 ARs (845 345 viewers) and Survivor SA averaged 4.8 ARs (931 615 viewers). This translates to Survivor SA having a 10% stronger viewership currently than Idols III, and there are still two more episodes and the grand finale yet to be broadcast.
The M-Net statement adds: It is important to note that viewers don't only watch the show on M-Net, but also tune in to the repeats on the M-Net Series Channel. Taking these viewers into consideration as well, Survivor SA draws an average of more than one million viewers per week.
Compared to another of M-Net's reality shows that aired in the same time slot previously, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Survivor SA's average ratings are 15% higher in the total market, M-Net states.
