Striking SAB workers hand over memo

Striking SA Breweries (SAB) workers affiliated to the Food and Allied Workers' Union (Fawu) handed over a memorandum to the company on Tuesday (8 October).
Striking SAB workers hand over memo

Fawu spokesman Dominique Swartz said about 100 striking SAB workers gathered at the company's premises in Newlands, Cape Town.

"We are handing over a memorandum which states that we want a nine percent increase," she said.

SAB is offering workers 7%, but Swartz said it worked out that this would mean wages rose by 4.4% and the remaining 2.6% relied on performance-related payments.

"We just think that is scandalous," said Swartz.

SAB management accepted the memorandum from the workers. The company said it had a contingency plan in place to minimise disruptions to operations and customers.

The Fawu strike began more than a week ago.
