While this new boutique continues to offer the traditional high-quality safari retail goods, its name and décor hint at a broader vision. The 4Cs is the Wilderness sustainability framework (see: www.wilderness-the4Cs.com).
The 4Cs is an ethos that has characterised its adherence to genuine ecotourism since 1983, but is something we have only recently begun to really expose its guests to as a consideration of what it might mean in their own day-to-day lives.
The new Mombo 4Cs Centre provides an opportunity to highlight each of the 4Cs in a light, contemporary space where gallery and emporium are combined. High craft and traditional cultural artefact stand side by side and complement each other, while each element - from the souk-style centrepieces to the more conventional merchandising and the various displays - encourages discovery.
All profits from sales in this and every other retail offering in its Botswana camps are reinvested into its sustainability projects in the country, whether this be biodiversity conservation work or community engagement. More than this, a platform is provided for many community projects to display their work and not only generate income, but also profile and highlight cultural art, tradition and technique to a First-World audience.
