Tourist numbers up 2% in December

Times Live says that more than 2,5-million people visited South Africa over the festive season.

It quotes the Department of Home Affairs saying that the majority of visitors came from Britain, America and Germany as well as from countries within the Southern African Development Community.

Statistically, this is two percent more than the number of travellers to the country last year.

Meanwhile Business Day quotes South African Tourism as estimating that the foreign tourists spend about R1 000 a day while in this country. It says the global financial crisis has not prevent a large influx of tourists to this country over the festive season.

Neighbouring countries such as Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia and Botswana topped the list of frequent visitors to South Africa in December, although people from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique added to the tourist numbers.
