Jeremy Maggs - our man in Cuba

SAfm's news anchor Jeremy Maggs will be presenting his show live from the Non Aligned Movement Summit in Havana, Cuba, from Monday, 11 September 2006, to Saturday, 16 September, giving live coverage of the Summit. Maggs will provide voice packages for a range of programmes on the station.

Says executive producer Steven Lang: "SAfm prides itself in bringing its listeners first hand account of news as and when it develops. Earlier this year we covered the DRC elections successfully exploiting the dual broadcast technology and the Cuba reports will be fascinating"

PM Live (4pm - 6pm) will have live dual broadcasts between Havana and Johannesburg from Monday to Friday, with Maggs anchoring in Havana and co-host Tsepiso Makwetla in Auckland Park.

Weekend PM Live (Saturday and Sunday 8pm - 21pm) will also have live dual broadcasts hosted by Maggs and Fenly Foxen on Saturday and Sunday. As for AM Live and Weekend AM Live, there will be pre-packaged reports by SABC news presenters in Cuba. Midday Live will also feature audio packages.

Guests to be featured throughout the coverage include South Africa's ambassador to Cuba Thinjiwe Mtintso, South Africa Foreign Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and newsmakers sourced at the summit.

Issues to be unpacked include Cuba under Fidel Castro, looking at some of the resolutions taken at the 2003 NAM summit held in Malaysia and how they have been implemented, and likely matters to arise at the summit such as the situation in the Middle East, Iran and its nuclear programme, war on terror and the United Nations reform.

There will also be a profile on Cuba, the small Caribbean island which is famous for cigars and hosting the summit.
