On air for a long, long, long time

As a youth radio station broadcasting to an audience of predominantly 16 - 28 year-olds, MFM 92.6 - the old Matie FM - seeks to constantly create innovative and ground-breaking performance. With this in mind, it teamed up with Absa's new Student Lifestyle Center in Stellenbosch to set a record 72-hour broadcast marathon.

MFM's sports editor Richard Maspero was chosen to undertake this task, with a team of three presenters (Steyn du Toit, Nantale Muwonge and Michael Bossenger) to back him up in 12-hour intervals.

After kicking off on Tuesday, 23 May 2006, at 6pm, Maspero saw it through to 6pm on Friday, 26 May 2006, with neither break nor sleep, breaking previous records set by 5FM and TuksFM.

Supported by Medi-Clinic, listeners were able to monitor the physical effect of sleep deprivation and follow the physiological and mental changes associated with this.

On a lighter side, the theme of the broadcast was "72 Post-Millennium Albums That Will Change Your Life", focusing on albums and artists that have shaped modern society, post 2000.
