Hotel accommodation levels slightly higher

Total income for SA's hospitality sector rose by 6.3% year on year in December‚ Statistics SA's (Stats SA) tourist accommodation survey released on Monday (18 February) showed.

The survey is conducted monthly and covers a sample of public and private enterprises involved in short-stay accommodation‚ with the results used to compile estimates of tourism satellite accounts as well as the gross domestic product.

Total income for the sector increased by 5.2% in the fourth quarter of last year compared with the same period in 2011‚ figures showed. This includes income from accommodation‚ restaurants and bar sales‚ and "other" income.

Stats SA said that income from accommodation only‚ rose by 8.1% in the fourth quarter of last year compared mainly as a result of an increase of 1.1% in the number of stay-unit nights sold‚ and an increase of 6.9% in the average income per stay-unit night sold.

Income from accommodation increased by 7.6% year-on-year in December.

The number of stay-units available increased by 1.9% in the fourth quarter of last year compared with the same period in 2011‚ while the number of stay-units available rose by 2.1% on a year-on-year basis.

Stats SA describes a stay-unit as a unit of accommodation available to be charged out to guests. Examples include a powered site in a caravan park or a hotel room.

Stay-unit nights sold also rose 3.0% on a year-on-year basis‚ Stats SA reported‚ and rose 1.1% on a quarter-on-quarter basis.
