Gooderson Leisure - strong performance expected

Gooderson Leisure Corporation is likely to report improved earnings of between 50% and 65% a share for the six months to August, and Business Report says it issued a trading update expressing "cautious optimism" for a stronger performance in the second half of the year.

Dale McCann, managing director of the group says that increased first-half earnings were mainly due to higher occupancies and an increase in government spending in the conferencing division of the hotel group.

He says the hotel chain had adapted to changing requirements in times of "economic difficulty" by changing some of its four-star establishments to three-star ones.

The group has five properties in KwaZulu-Natal, including two beachfront properties in Durban and a game lodge in Hluhluwe. It has a resort in Limpopo and a hotel in Lone Hill.

McCann is confident that the group will do well in Durban when the UN Conference on Climate Change is held in the city in November with an expected 15 000 delegates attending the event.
