SA restaurants take their foot off the gas

More than 1 200 restaurants have closed because of a national gas shortage, according to the Restaurants' Association, chief executive Wendy Alberts. The Mail & Guardian quotes her as saying that most restaurants had converted to gas because of the high cost of electricity and interruptions in electricity supplies.

The association claims to represent about 2 500 restaurants throughout the country. Alberts says that the association, representing the affected restaurants, will take the matter to the National Consumer Commission.

Gas producers have confirmed that there is a nationwide shortage of gas because of unplanned shutdowns at production plants. It is not known when the gas shortage will be lifted or when the refineries will return to full production.
