Stolen Picasso paintings found in Serbia

Two extremely valuable Picasso paintings have been recovered by Serbian police having been stolen from a Swiss cultural centre in 2008, according to The New Age and foreign media.

The two paintings by Pablo Picasso, Tete de Cheval from 1962 and Verre et Pichet from 1944, were valued at €3,1-million. They were discovered in a joint operation undertaken by Serbian and Swiss police.

The two paintings, one showing a horse's head in blues, greys and whites, and the other a still life of a glass and pitcher in red and green, belong to Sprengel museum in Hanover, Germany but were stolen from the Pfaeffikon cultural centre near Zurich while on loan from the museum.

An investigation into how the paintings came to be in Serbia and how they had remained hidden for several years was underway.
