Legacies of Landscape Exhibition at the Michaelis Gallery
The exhibition, curated by Cara van der Westhuizen, reveals some of the ways in which artists have represented the landscape and have drawn on its political and historical resonance. Many of the prints have not been previously exhibitied, some dating back as far as the 1600s.
To be launched at the exhibition is a portfolio, Homage, created as a tribute to Cecil Skotnes and his contribution to South African art. Master printmaker, inspired teacher and artist, Skotnes believed that no one with talent should be denied the opportunity to train as an artist. To honour his legacy, the Michaelis School of Fine Art is to establish a scholarship in his name and to this end several artists have contributed work to the Homage portfolio, among them Willie Bester, Norman Catherine, Peter Clarke, William Kentridge, David Koloane, Louis Maqhubela and others. All profits from the sale of the portfolio will go to the Cecil Skotnes Scholarship.
Legacies of Landscape will run at the Michaelis Gallery, Hiddingh Campus, Orange Street, Cape Town from 28 July to 21 August. The gallery will be open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday. For more information about the exhibition contact curator Cara van der Westhuizen at or call 021 480 7112.
