Zeitz MOCAA's April lineup celebrates SA's 27 years of freedom

In April 2021, South Africa marks 27 years since it held its first democratic elections that brought an end to the Apartheid regime. In line with this occasion, the Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town will celebrate freedom during its April lineup.

While its new opening hours – Thursday through Sunday – can no longer accommodate Africa Wednesdays, the art museum has provided free entry to the museum on your birthday (or any day during your birthday month) with the presentation of a valid South African ID or African passport.

Since mid-March, Zeitz MOCAA has been able to welcome up to 100 visitors at any one time to the museum. And while there’s still plenty to see in its galleries, it also offers in-person and online programming where you can take a deep dive into the themes prevalent in the current exhibitions.

    Critical Discourse programming

Led by Zeitz MOCAA’s curatorial team, the Critical Discourse programming for April is related to the current Alfredo Jaar: The Rwanda Project exhibition and the annual International Day of Reflection on the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

On Thursday, 29 April, an online roundtable discussion will focus on the relationship between trauma and aesthetics, and processes of healing.

On Saturday, 17 April, an engaging discussion and workshop about art and the expression of faith with calligrapher Achmat Soni will be held.

    Head to Head

The monthly Head to Head series on Instagram Live is another opportunity to be part of relevant conversations with the movers and shakers of the art ecosystem.

This month’s one-hour session on Tuesday, 13 April sees participatory researcher, artist and facilitator Nabeel Petersen and Liesl Hartman, Zeitz MOCAA’s head of education, in conversation about positive disruption.

    Centre for Art Education

Learning through play is an integral part of a child’s development – and art provides a fun, easily accessible platform for this. Zeitz MOCAA’s Centre for Art Education (CFAE), situated on the lower ground floor of the museum, is a child-friendly space that offers an array of creative workshops for the entire family to take part in.

From Tuesday, 20 April through Sunday, 2 May, children can engage in the creative possibilities of easel painting and drawing. The CFAE space will be transformed into a traditional studio with activities incorporating the use of the portable easel.

Themes that will be explored include flowers, foliage and flora; a still life of sweets; reproduction of famous artworks; and decorating a clock to help children learn about time.

On Saturday, 24 April, CFAE will host a family learning workshop inspired by themes in Zeitz MOCAA’s exhibitions. Aimed at accompanied children aged four to eight years, parents and their children can enjoy multimodal and multi-sensory experiences creating artworks with a range of three-dimensional techniques and mediums.

The workshop will take place from 10 am to 12 pm at the CFAE at a cost of R210 with free entry for children, and free entry for members and their children.

And if you aren’t keen on leaving home, Zeitz MOCAA’s Online Open Studio creative sessions are also available online.
