Cuban born composer and conductor Tania León will give a unique public open workshop at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg on Sunday, 12 August 2012, at 3pm with the JPO Academy Orchestra. The workshop is presented by Wits School of Arts/WitsMusic and Wits Theatre.
León is highly regarded as a composer and conductor and recognised for her accomplishments as an educator and advisor to arts organisations. She has been profiled on TV channels ABC, CBS, CNN, PBS, Univision, Telemundo, and independent films.
León's opera Scourge of Hyacinths, based on a play by Wole Soyinka with staging and design by Robert Wilson, received over 20 performances throughout Europe and Mexico. Commissioned by Hans Werner Henze and the city of Munich for the Fourth Munich Biennale, it took home the coveted BMW Prize.
She has been guest conductor with the Beethovenhalle Orchestra in Bonn, the Gewandhausorchester in Leipzig, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, the National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and the New York Philharmonic.
