#MusicExchange: Sasha-Lee Davids returns to the spotlight with new single, online concert

South African singer and songwriting artist Sasha-Lee Davids returns to the spotlight with a brand new single and her first online concert this weekend.

After spending the last few years working on several music projects, Davids is back on the national music scene with the release of her latest music offering, “A Little Love” - which the singer and songwriter released last week.

Davids, who hails from Atlantis in the Western Cape and who rose to fame as a joint winner on music reality show Idols SA in 2009, says she is ready for the SA audience to finally hear what she has been working on in the studio.

Davids, who wrote the track herself, describes the much-anticipated track as a “feel-good song”, adding that “it has a great message that reminds us how important life is”.

Davids is also hosting an online music concert on 27 February 2021 entitled Sasha-Lee Davids Live.

This will be Davids’s first online concert; tickets are available from Quicket.

I spoke to her last week.

The new decade means:

New life, new vision and new opportunities for growth.

Fame is about:

Building a strong brand that generates a loyal following.

Retirement will happen when:

When I hit the Lotto jackpot!

I don't do:

Rosemary and thyme.

What does music mean to you?

Music is my therapy. I’m able to express myself and free my emotions without paying for it.

My music is about:

Love, life and people. I’m at a place where that is all that matters right now.

I would love to co-write with:

Locally, Loyiso Balal; it should’ve happened 12 years ago! Lol. Internationally, Ryan Tedder; not only cause I love him but also because I looove him

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

The fact that I get to travel, meet new amazing people and work with them.

Any funny moments on stage:

Funniest moments are when I forget the lyrics and decide to repeat a verse. The best is when I forgot the opening line, the band played the intro forever and I just stood there thinking: “How do I get out of this?”

My heroes:

My parents, I still don’t know how they managed to raise 10 children who still respect them to this day.

Which living person do you admire most and why?

I admire any person who is able to get up from a fall with dignity. Artists who are able to reinvent themselves and their music successfully and build and keep a strong following.

It’s your round, what are you drinking?

Bubbles.

What makes you stand out?

I believe being 100% authentic makes you stand out.

If you were not a musician, what would you do?

Journalism or psychology was the plan.

Quiet, calm, funny, interesting, creative.

Five favourite SA albums:

Zahara - Loliwe
Romanz - My Hele Hart
Ringo Madlingozi - Ntumba
Ernie Smith - My African Heart
Corlea Botha - Wie Ek Is

What song changed your life?

Definitely “Unbreakable'' by Westlife. I was forced into singing it in grade seven for a class project and they had no idea I could sing. After that, I was used for every school concert up to matric. I couldn't hide anymore.

Favourite fashion garment:

Jeans and blazers.

Top of your bucket list:

Travelling in a hot air balloon.

Your greatest achievement:

Winning two reality shows at the same time.

What do you complain about most often?

Wi-Fi.

What is your fear?

Finding a snake or spider in my bed.

On stage, I tend to:

Talk to myself in my head to remember my lyrics and not mess up.

Do you do charity work and, if you do, what do you do?

I do, wherever I can help. My church alone has people who need help, even if it's just emotional support. I've also been part of a charity foundation called Out of Africa Children's Fund for cancer. I’m also joining a foundation called Bless a Baby, where they collect baby items for newborns and drop them at hospitals.

Wishes and dreams:

I wish for health and success in this difficult time we are still trying to navigate our way through. I dream to spread a message of love and kindness globally.
