#MusicExchange: Karin Kortje
Basil Appollis will serve as director and Camillo Lombard will accompany Kortje. She is a former winner of the South African singing reality show Idols and hails from Grabouw in the Western Cape. After winning the third season of Idols, Kortje released her debut album entitled Forever And The Day in November 2006. The album received positive reviews from critics and exceeded sales – reaching gold status in South Africa selling just over 20,000 copies
I caught up with her last week ahead of her show.
What does music mean to you?
Other than the fact that it is my job, music fulfils me.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?
Singing. Whether it is live on stage, or in the studio, I feel my happiest when I have a microphone in my hand.
Any funny moments on stage?
I once chewed some gum on stage while I was singing. It later got stuck in my throat, luckily I managed to divert from stopping the song and got the issue sorted out immediately.
It’s your round, what are you drinking?
Whiskey and water.
Dream gig to do?
To sell out Cape Town Stadium with me and my protégé singers as the headliners.
Nicknames?
Kay Kay.
If you were not a musician, what would you do?
I'd work as a beauty therapist.
Pick five words to describe yourself?
Humble, strong, talented, beautiful, and honest.
What song changed your life?
I'm So Ready; my winning song from Idols SA.
Favourite fashion garment?
Cherrie Couture dresses.
Your greatest achievement?
Is still to come.
What do you complain about most often?
Too much to mention (laughs).
On stage, I tend to?
Work work work. I don't mind putting in the hours until the final product is perfect from my point of view.
Wishes and dreams for 2018?
Prosperity and happiness.
