Absa statement on transforming the playing fields

Following the weekend controversy over transformation in South African rugby, Absa released the following statement yesterday, Wednesday, 22 September 2010.

As a major sponsor of sport in the country, transformation is a very important consideration for Absa. In order to aid and enhance this process, it will continue to engage with all relevant stakeholders across all the sporting codes that it's involved in.

It believes that SA Rugby has taken significant steps to transform the game in our country. If the momentum is maintained, especially in the Absa Currie Cup, it envisions a situation where all deserving South Africans will take pride in participating in the sport as well as becoming proud supporters of the game.

Absa Group Chief Executive, Maria Ramos, states that Absa has raised questions regarding the matter of transformation.

She says: "Our questions are not only a reflection of our own values as an organisation, but are also part of the commitments that have been made by rugby in its agreements with Absa as a sponsor. It is, therefore, appropriate that, as a sponsor, we ask questions and raise issues that we deem appropriate and which are related to this matter."

Absa has engaged various sectors of the media to explain and clarify its views about transformation and, therefore, does not believe that further comment regarding this matter is necessary at this stage.
