Woyzeck takes you on an emotional journey
A masterpiece. A work of art. An emotional journey. These are just a few things that come to mind when thinking of Woyzeck. The play was originally written by Georg Buchner in 1834 and was the first play in which the main characters were from the working class. It has now been transformed into a contemporary performance based in the African landscape.
The theatre in which the play is performed is small, but perfect. The intimacy that is created between the actors and audience wouldn't be possible within a huge theatre.
Woyzeck is based in the army and within the bunkers and surrounding areas. It combines singing, dancing, acting and movement to create a whirlwind of emotions that engulf the audience and hold them gripped until the very last bow. The story is intense, full of anticipation and realistic in a way I have never seen before.
I must take my hat off to the actors, who managed to keep the energy running between them for the entire performance and for the way they moved and sang in complete harmony.
There are many parts where there is more than one thing going on, but this simply adds to the chaotic nature of the script.
Woyzeck is unlike anything I have ever seen; it is not recommended for anyone under the age of 16, but I highly recommend it to anyone else!
The production runs until 11 September at 6.30pm or 8.15pm nightly. Ticket prices range from R70 for the Baxter Monday special offer, which includes a light meal and show, to R130 at weekends.
