The clothing, textile, footwear and leather sector has recorded a significant slowdown in the rate of job losses, according to a general secretariat report tabled at last week's National Executive Committee meeting of the Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu).
The report, based on actual job loss data collected and tracked on the union's job loss database, showed a 30.1% decrease in job losses in 2010 compared with 2009.
Sactwu's National Executive Committee was held from 16 - 18 March 2011 in Cape Town.
In 2010, a total of 10,143 job losses were recorded, compared with 14,516 in 2009.
The union ascribed this slowdown in the number of jobs lost to the impact of its "Save Jobs Campaign" measures, visibly increased government support for the industry, more strategic implementation of trade measures by government, and rising prices in China.
Sactwu's National Executive Committee welcomed the slowdown in the rate of job losses but called on union structures to remain vigilant and to step up the various elements of its "Save Jobs Campaign", under its 2010 National Congress theme: A New Growth Path for Decent Work in the Clothing, Textile, Footwear and Leather Industry.
