New Cape Whale Coast Route for Western Cape

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on Friday, 11 September 2009, between Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU) and the Cape Overberg District Municipality, which will facilitate the development of the Cape Whale Coast Route.

The Department of Economic Development and Tourism, together with CTRU, is contributing R200 000 to the development of this new tourism product. The cheque will be handed to the Overstrand Municipality, which has been appointed to oversee the first stage of the implementation of this project, by CTRU CEO, Calvyn Gilfellan, at the MOU signing ceremony.

MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, said: "I am very excited about this announcement. Our magnificent marine creatures should be seen by as many people as possible and are a very special part of our tourism portfolio. We are committed to working with all partners to deliver effectively on our promise of maximising the benefits of tourism to all in the Western Cape."

Counters seasonality

CTRU CEO Calvyn Gilfellan is confident that a dedicated tourist route will boost visitor numbers to the area. "The migration of the whales between July and November draws large crowds every year. Tourists are spellbound by the natural beauty of our destination. Our tourism industry is in much need of these iconic products - a new whale route will help the industry counter seasonality and geographical spread."
