Timeless Elegance at Kenilworth Racecourse
The 150th running of the L'Ormarins Queen's Plate at Kenilworth Racecourse, Cape Town, on 8 January, 2011, will be accompanied by a blend of fine wine and fashion as Pocket Power attempts a world record-equalling fifth consecutive victory.
The works of talented local designers such as Stefania Morland and Malcolm Klûk are set to feature in the blue-and-white theme of Timeless Elegance, reflecting the tone of the event that dates back to 1861.
South African fashion icons such as Emily Bell from Marie Claire, Francesca Cumani, Errol Arendz, fashion designer, Thembi Mabule, one of the country's top milliners, and Samantha Walker, aka La Muse from Pop Ya Collar fashion blog, will serve as judges for the Best Dressed and Best Hat competitions. First prize awards include a tailor-made dress from Abigail Betz and a three-piece hat selection from Till Thembi, with L'Ormarins wine, Billecart Salmon Champagne and Cartier Fragrance amongst other prizes.
Atmosphere of luxury
The VIPs amongst the expected 8 000 racegoers can enjoy the atmosphere of luxury in their own private area within the exclusive Style Lounge Village. Uninterrupted views of the race track will be offered, along with a spread of cuisine and drinks. Guests will later enjoy a public concert featuring the talents of Louise Carver, Zebra and Giraffe, Locnville, Gazelle and Crazy White Boy.
A selection from one of the largest vintage car collections in the world will also be on display courtesy of the Franschhoek Motor Museum. The royal theme will be carried through with only blue-and-white cars featured, including the oldest vehicle on the day, the 1922 Isotta Fraschini.
