Workshops encourage young township musicians

The 'King Pie Business Of Music Workshops' will be hosted on the last Sunday of every month at the Tourism Hub on the Far East Bank, Alexandra, Sandton to encourage and educate township youth in core music business topics, including artist management, publishing, SAMRO, touring, record deals and other facets of the music industry.

The first workshop will take place on Sunday 27 February 2011 and features Sibu Molefe, the manager of well-known hip-hop crew Skwatta Kamp.

The workshops are hosted by author and music industry professional, David Chislett, who has been giving workshops on the business aspects of the music industry for the last two years and is the author of the book '1, 2, 1, 2'.

Alex FM has come on board as media partner, to interview speakers and help spread the word of the events. Hillside Digital, a local Alex film production company played a core role in conceptualising and facilitating the event together with Chislett, whilst the Alexandra Land and Property Owners Association Youth (ALPOAY) have kindly facilitated the venue. All parties will be present, adding value to the events.

"The organisation has aligned to this project as it accurately represents what we aim to achieve as a brand: support and advance the very community that is our market," notes Jeanne Geldenhuys, COO for King Pie. "It is a wonderful opportunity for the community of Alex to gain insight into the business of an industry that so many aspire to be part of."

The workshops kick off at 3pm each month with an opening address by Chislett, followed by the guest speaker for that day. The youth will then have a chance to ask questions and interact with industry leaders. The afternoon will conclude with King Pie distributing pies to the workshop attendees and a further chance to buy books, mingle and network.

Young Alex musicians will have the chance to strut their stuff in front of their peers and wrap up an entertaining and educational afternoon with live impromptu performances. Hillside will screen relevant educational DVDs and documentaries.
