ebook reader from kalahari.net

kalahari.net, one of the country's leading ebook retailers, has released a proprietary ebook reader application in a drive to make ebooks widely available to South Africans. The free software reader can be used on PCs and Macs.

Gerjo Hoffman, head of eContent says, "kalahari.net is aiming to drive the adoption of this new technology and increase the consumption of electronic content in South Africa. We are now offering all South Africans, with access to a computer, the opportunity to try the technology.

"We have designed the software around the customer; making it easy for him or her to build a comprehensive ebook library and then to consume it according to his or her own preference, whether on a PC or Mac."

Arthur Goldstuck, founder and MD of World Wide Worx, agrees with this approach. He says that the number of South Africans with a propensity to buy digital content will hit the one million mark by 2015 but that the ability for users to consume content on various platforms is vital to this success. "We see growing appetite for ebooks and digital content, so interoperability is the key to the e-book market taking off in this country."

Replace Adobe Digital Editions

Customers who previously used Adobe Digital Editions to access and read ebooks can now download the Reader instead and, because the Reader supports Adobe Digital Rights Management (DRM), customers can still read documents that are protected with Adobe DRM.

Moreover, it offers the following improvements for a superior reading experience:

  • View more pages at a time

  • Horizontal scrolling to replicate book reading
  • Thumbnails for easy search and reference
  • Chapter indicators for easy reference
  • Book marks and notes for personalisation in the table of contents.

Hoffman adds that the launch of ebooks has exceeded all expectations.
