Getaway readers to join the adventure
There are few jobs more alluring or glamorous than that of a travel writer. Now travel enthusiasts can experience that lifestyle at first-hand: Getaway is inviting a select number of readers to join its journalists on assignment in Africa and beyond.
The initiative falls under the brand's newly established Getaway Adventures division and is intended to enable Getaway to foster a close, interactive relationship with its consumers.
Engaging readers
“We have long debated how to take our brand to our readers in new and engaging ways,” explained Getaway editor Don Pinnock. “Our writers go to some wonderful places and we got to thinking our readers would be keen to join them. Getaway Adventures makes that possible.”
Publisher Jacqueline Lahoud elaborated, "Getaway has partnered with trusted operators to negotiate packages for small groups to accompany the journalists on assignment, at very favourable rates. Now our readers can enjoy the adventure with us."
The first group leaves on 25 June, when 10 adventurers join Pinnock on a two-week assignment to explore the customs and culture of Kashmir, “known as Little Tibet”, in India. They will visit villages and ancient temples, observe a Buddhist ceremony in the Himalayas, live on a houseboat on mountain lakes and stop off at the Taj Mahal.
Head to Idonesia
Two months later, readers will head for Indonesia with deputy editor Justin Fox to visit Komodo dragons, the world's largest monitor lizard, and to explore the island, which is a World Heritage Site.
Other Getaway Adventure trips planned for this year are a cruise through Darwin's Galapagos, an exploration of the wild geology of Iceland and adventures in Greenland's Arctic Circle. Local destinations in the pipeline include houseboating in Chobe, East Africa's great migration, Botswana's Okavango Delta and Zambia's wonderful parks, as well as birding, geological and hiking trips in South Africa.
