800 000 jobs for tourism sector?

The government is hoping to create about 800 000 jobs in the tourism sector by 2015 and to double its direct contribution to South Africa's gross domestic product to R125-billion, according to higher education and training deputy minister Hlengiwe Mkhize.

She was speaking at a careers expo held in Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium that attracted hundreds of pupils from around the country as well as young people from Swaziland and Nigeria. The Mercury says that about 50 companies and government departments participated in the event.

Meanwhile the Economic Development Minister, Ebrahim Patel has warned that the global economic environment was "far more hostile to job creation" than it had been six months ago.

IOL quotes the minister as saying that to boost job creation the Industrial Development Corporation is offering businesses access to capital at three percentage points below prime in an effort to stimulate new enterprises and create jobs.
