The smallest country in Africa, The Kingdom of Swaziland as it is officially known, is a diverse country which offers visitors a wide variety of adventurous and cultural experiences.
As Swaziland is an easy drive or flight from Johannesburg, its close proximity makes the Kingdom an ideal holiday destination for families and those seeking adventure. South African Rands are accepted at the border posts and a fee is payable dependent on the type of vehicle you are driving. The various border posts operate on different opening and closing times, so it is best to be sure of the correct operating hours of the border post you will be entering at. Although no visas are required for South African citizens, a passport, which must have at least three months validity on it, is required. South African 'Rands' are accepted throughout Swaziland and some tourist attractions will only accept South African notes. Most hotels, restaurants and shops also accept credit cards, however, they may not be used for fuel purchases.
A year-round destination
Swaziland is a year-round destination and all cultural, sporting and tourist activities are available to visitors throughout the year. Rain does fall mostly within the summer months and winters are moderate to mild, with days generally reaching a high of 20 degrees celsius.
Travelling in Swaziland is relatively easy and the best way to journey through the Kingdom is by car. Away from town and the main routes you will most likely encounter gravel roads and in some of the more isolated and remote areas, a 4WD vehicle is recommended. Most of the gravel roads are marked on a road map. However, if you see a road not listed on your map, you can be pretty sure that it will be a bumpy but exciting ride.
There are companies in Swaziland which organise tours and/or safaris for travellers. They offer services from simple accommodation bookings to detailed, tailor-made guided tours. Their knowledge of Swaziland is exceptional and they will be able to suggest itineraries to fit all bucket lists, requirements and budgets.
The rich culture and the friendliness of Swazi people will make all visitors feel truly welcome in this magnificent country. Swaziland's picturesque landscapes which include rolling mountains and valleys, enchanting forests and plains as well as untamed wildlife reserves, represent all that's truly unique about Africa.
