Green Point Urban Park, Sea Point Promenade become favourites

The popularity of the Green Point Urban Park has grown immensely, with nearly 70,000 people entering the venue last year. Other recreational spaces, such as the Sea Point Promenade, have also become favourites amongst the people of the Mother City and visitors alike.

This project commenced in November 2012 and R19. 3 million has been spent to restore this section of the sea wall, repave the walkway behind, and construct a low seating wall along the back edge of the walkway.

"Visitors to the Sea Point Promenade are continuously intrigued by the various temporary art exhibitions, managed by the Public Arts Programme, and the ongoing debate around each one on social media has increased interest in this area dramatically. These are added attractions to already existing features and all feedback received thus far has been overwhelmingly positive," said the City's Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.

A visit to The Urban Park, part of the City's Green Goal Legacy Project, will boast a 12.5-hectare space that is perfect for families and friends.

Undeniable uniqueness

"Besides the undeniable uniqueness that comes from the location and its direct response to the surroundings, there are so many factors that have been built upon at the Urban Park. For instance, the accessibility and mix of amenities, quality of park furniture, the vegetation, the sounds of water and seagulls, the views of mountain, stadium and city, and the list goes on," said Johan van Papendorp, Landscape Architect, OvP Asscociates and Landscape Architects.

The park features a richly biodiverse garden, picnic areas, a space for informal celebrations, paths for cycling and walking, outdoor exercise gym, and an adventure play park for children between the ages of 7 to16 years.

The biodiversity park is also an educational tool as information boards, consisting of factual information of the natural beauty present, are provided throughout the park.

City parks create community spirit and, furthermore, one can undoubtedly agree that this location provides an amenity that most communities could only dream of, said Van Papendorp.
