Kama Sutra now with extra tongue
If there's a perception that Afrikaans people are conservative about sex, a new book, titled Afrikamasutra, might change that position - and many others besides.
Top artists Diek Grobler, Hardus Koekemoer and Marna Schoeman were roped in by translator and writer Ilse Groenewald for the book, which has been in the works since 2011.
The book was eventually accepted by publisher Unisa Press, after "drifting around in publishing purgatory", Groenewald said.
The book is the Afrikaans translation of Vatsyayana's classic Kama Sutra, a manual of sexual positions originally written in Sanskrit between the first and sixth century AD.
The book can teach everyone a thing or two.
"The person who thinks he or she knows it all should wonder why their beds are so empty some nights," Grobler said.
But if you think it's just a sexual manual and follow the writing to the last letter, "you might find yourself resembling a pretzel instead of reaching Nirvana", he said.
Groenewald said her favourite quote from the book was: "Like you would knead dough before baking, a woman also needs preparation before sexual intimacy if she is to get any pleasure from it."
She said the books available for Afrikaans youth on the subject of sex when she was growing up "have made a generous contribution to Afrikaners' sexual anxieties".
Afrikamasutra is being launched at the Trent Gallery in Pretoria tomorrow.
Groenewald said it should retail for around R196.
