Meals on Wheels cook for less fortunate
Meals on Wheels Community Services, a non-profit organisation assisting the aged since 1961, have challenged 15 of their corporate supporters to compete with each other to see who can prepare the most delicious nutritious meals for more than 600 people.
On 21 November, Meals on Wheels and their supporters will aim to prepare 10,000 hot and nourishing meals for less fortunate South Africans during their annual cook-off at Gillooly's Farm in Bedfordview, Johannesburg.
Teams of eight people will be required to chop, peel, spice, cook and deliver meals and will be judged on their hygiene, cleanliness as well as the appearance and taste of the food. Meals on Wheels will have a fleet of vehicles ready to deliver the food to less fortunate individuals in Pretoria, the Vaal Triangle, the Johannesburg CBD, and the East, West and South Rand.
Privilege to be involved
Rhodes Food Group, a long-time supporter of Meals on Wheels through its donations of canned food, has entered a team from its Ready Meals factory in Gauteng. "We are pleased to be able to bring a smile to those less fortunate by participating in such a heart-warming project. Meals on Wheels do such amazing work to uplift local communities; it is a privilege to be involved," said Ready Meals GM, Dominique Nelissen.
Foodbank South Africa has also come on board as a partner by sponsoring 10,000 luxury Christmas packs which will be delivered along with the meals.
Meal on Wheels is a multi-faceted welfare service that depends on volunteers to prepare and deliver over ten million meals per year to disadvantaged senior citizens in the comfort of their own homes, enabling then to remain in the community for far longer than would otherwise be the case.
