Johannesburg Press Club to debate transport crises

South Africa's transport challenges and the possible solutions to the consequent crises will be discussed at the Johannesburg Press Club's lunchtime meeting at noon on Wednesday 20 July 2011 at Marks Park Sports Club in Emmarentia Johannesburg.

Speakers:

  • Nazir Alli, CEO, SA National Roads Agency (SANRAL);
  • Zenzo Mahlangu, general secretary, SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (SATAWU);
  • Coenraad Bezuidenhout, acting executive director: economic policy, Business Unity South Africa (BUSA);
  • Dr Vaughan Mostert, senior lecturer: department transport and supply management, University of Johannesburg;
  • Gary Ronald, head of public affairs, Automobile Association (AA) of SA

Press Club members, working press, as well as interested members of the public are welcome to attend what is promising to be a most exciting and lively discussion on one of the more contentious issues.

"Greater Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane have undergone tremendous transformations over the last four decades and many newly developed areas lack access to the rail system, resulting in an over reliance on road transport," says Johannesburg Press Club chairperson, Clare van Zwieten.

"South Africans need a safe and efficient public transportation system that will connect businesses, people and places in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. It is crucial that transport systems in major metropolitan areas be efficient and that South Africa's transport challenges be faced head on."
