Tiger Brands (TBS) will destroy the 17‚000 packs of Tastic Simply Delicious sauces and ready-to-eat rice products it is removing from retailer shelves‚ managing executive Naresh Singh said this week.
The company last week said it was recalling the entire Tastic Simply Delicious range after some of these products tested positive for traces of banned carcinogenic colourants‚ including industrial dye Sudan 1.
It found the colourants in seven of 20 brands in this product range‚ which is imported from a supplier in India. The affected products were produced in June and July.
Singh said late on Monday, 20 October 2014, that Tiger Brands had removed "most" of the products.
The company was recalling the entire range‚ including unaffected brands and products.
"We're taking it back to our sites and it will be destroyed by a third party‚" Singh said. "We will get a certificate for the destruction of the product.
"At the moment we are engaging with the supplier. They are still investigating what's happened.
"We will negotiate and obviously recover costs that have been incurred by ourselves‚" Singh said.
Tiger Brands started regular precautionary testing for harmful colourants after the 2005 Sudan Red scandal in the retailer sector. According to Singh‚ this is the first time it had picked up these banned colourants.
