This means it'll now cost $9.99 for overseas viewers, but existing subscribers in the US, Canada and Latin America will have a grace period before their subscription fees are increased, enjoying the current price for a year.

The service lets subscribers stream content in high definition to two screens at the same time, explains MyBroadband, United States, Canada, and parts of Latin America, and follows a similar price hike in Europe earlier in 2015.

The increase is a result of Netflix paying more for the original and third-party content it offers, with plans for Netflix to extend its service into South Africa before the end of 2016.

But while the video-on-demand (VOD) market in South Africa has "seen a huge explosion of services over the last couple of months," according to Htxt.Africa, only 18% of South Africans are aware of pure play VOD services like Netflix.
