Female perspectives of ‘new realities' of life in SA

Recession, environment and on-demand living focus of women-only study.

Inviting South African women of all shapes, ages, vocations and colours to participate, Women24.com - reputedly the largest online community of SA women - yesterday, 1 June 2009, launched the annual Female Nation Survey.

Claimed to be the most comprehensive of its kind, the 2009 survey is expected to reveal South African women's unique perspectives on everything from recycling, the credit crunch and social networking to marriage, careers, hobbies, sex and parenting.

Women24 Editor Sam Wilson says, “Since last year's Female Nation Survey the context has changed considerably. We have a new President, live über-connected lives and are becoming more planet-conscious. We're also officially in a recession. As a result, women's lifestyles, home life and social interactions are changing.”

The 70-question survey poses a mix of ‘new reality' topics like online behaviour and carbon-footprints while more traditional themes like balancing work and children, sex and body image remain hot topics.

“Women never have enough time. From striving for the exec's title, fetching the kids from ballet, cooking gourmet and keeping trim and manicured, it's exhausting!” quips Wilson.

Last year, 8400 women participated in the survey and revealed the titillating insight that SA's happiest women are married, childless and self-employed. “While women who work for themselves were the most content in 2008, it will be interesting to see what influence the economic downturn, increased internet access and eco-consciousness has had on them.”
