Get there with the G502

Sony Ericsson announced the launch of the G502 last week, a compact candy-bar phone that extends its range of web-enabled devices to give a broader, mainstream appeal. It brings the power of the web to a more affordable phone segment, enabling even more users to stay up-to-date with high-speed web browsing and fast downloads.

The new G502 is:

  • Easy to set-up - Email set-up wizard for instant access to your own webmail account
  • Easy on the eye - the full mobile internet experience in a great looking and compact phone
  • Easy and fast to use - browse the web in landscape mode and take advantage of the high-speed HSDPA functionality for fast web access and downloading

The handset comes with the latest version of Google Maps for Mobile, allowing users to view high quality maps in satellite view, plus listings of local restaurants and hotels, complete with any reviews or ratings available. For navigation, users simply enter the start and finish locations, and receive point-by-point directions of how to get to the destination. Plugging the GPS Enabler HGE-100 accessory into the phone adds GPS capability.

The phone allows users to link their webmail account to their phone through the easy-to-follow ‘set-up wizard' guide - enabling existing email accounts to be directed to the device. It also supports Exchange ActiveSync® for security and complete mobility.

Accessing websites is now up to four times faster than with standard 3G (UMTS), thanks to the HSDPA speeds of the G502. If one particular website is viewed more than others, an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed can be selected, enabling one-click access directly to this page from the phone's desktop. The phone also comes pre-loaded with a weather forecast application.

“The G502 is the latest in an established line of classic Sony Ericsson phones that cram a wealth of time-saving features into a pocket-sized phone,” said Martin Winkler, director of global marketing and head of multimedia web at Sony Ericsson. “It improves on its predecessors by adding HSDPA for high-speed web connectivity, making it appealing to those who need to stay on top of busy lives.”

The phone also features, among other things:

  • Bluetooth™ stereo (A2DP)
  • Media player
  • Mega Bass™
  • Music tones (MP3/AAC)
  • PlayNow™
  • TrackID™ and FM radio
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • 3D games
  • Picture blogging
  • Video recording, streaming and viewing

The G502 is a UMTS/HSDPA 2100 and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900 phone that will be available in Champagne Black and Brilliant Hazel from selected cellular outlets from July 2008 at a RSP of R2,800, including VAT.
