British supermarket Tesco says sales rise

LONDON, UK: Britain's biggest retailer Tesco said on Tuesday, 8 December 2009, that group sales rose by almost 9% in its third quarter as consumer confidence improved globally.

Sales revenue from goods sold, excluding petrol, climbed by 8.8% in the 13 weeks to 28 November 2009, the supermarket giant said in a trading update.

"We've continued to make good progress this quarter with contributions to growth from across the business," Tesco chief executive Terry Leahy said in a company statement.

"We are seeing improving customer confidence and encouraging trends in both the UK and our international businesses, although recessionary conditions still exist in a number of markets."

Britain is stuck in its longest recession on record.
