Food and beverages industry up 9.0% y/y in August

Total income generated by SA's food and beverages industry rose by 9.0% in August 2013 compared with August 2012 (year on year) in nominal terms‚ Statistics SA reported.

The highest annual growth rates were recorded for "other" income‚ with a 13.6% increase and food sales‚ with a 9.0% increase.

In August the highest annual growth rates were recorded for takeaway and fast-food outlets‚ which contributed 4.3 percentage points and restaurants and coffee shops‚ which contributed 3.7 percentage points.

Total income increased by 8.0% in the three months ended August compared with the same three months last year.

Takeaway and fast-food outlets, restaurants and coffee shops were the main contributors to the 8.0% increase.
