Local whiskey sails away with gold
Three Ships Bourbon Cask Finish, the 100% South African blended whiskey, won gold and Best In Class at the prestigious 2008 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), announced in London on Tuesday, 17 June 2008.
Ranked against a broad spectrum of whiskies produced outside of Scotland, its gold medal is the whiskey's first major accolade since its launch in 2005, building on the tradition of quality established by the brand's existing award winning range of three- and five-year-old whiskies.
Desiree Ngema, brand manager, says this blended bourbon, produced in SA's very own James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, has shown its capacity to perform with distinction against the world's leading competitors. “The award draws attention to South Africa as a major international player and strengthens our reputation as a producer of superior quality whiskey.
“The Three Ships Bourbon Cask Finish has already captured the interest of discerning whiskey drinkers domestically. Favoured for its lighter style, it has shown considerable growth over the past few years.”
Master distiller Andy Watts says, “The different whiskies were matured for a minimum of 3 years before being selected for a further marriage period of 6 months in the American Oak wood which makes up the bourbon cask.”
The Three Ships Bourbon Cask Finish whiskey retails for around R105 per bottle.
