Demand drives boost in whisky production

Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky business of Pernod Ricard, is to increase its operations facilities in Speyside by expanding Glenlivet Distillery and re-opening Braeval Distillery. These expansion plans come in the wake of a global increase in demand for the company's Scotch whisky brands.

David de Mardt, MD of Pernod Ricard South Africa, says “Chivas Brothers' exports exceed one million bottles every day around the world and demand for Scotch whisky is at a record high. This latest investment will enable us to meet this growing global demand, while simultaneously demonstrating our commitment to business development in South Africa”.

Plans for the expansion of Glenlivet Distillery include the installation of a new mash tun, six new stills and eight new wash backs to accommodate increased production. Construction is planned to begin later this year.

Braeval Distillery is due to re-open in July, having been dormant since 2002. Situated near Tomintoul, the distillery was first opened by the company in 1973. The distillery has two wash stills and four spirit stills which, when back in production, will supply spirit for the company's portfolio of blended whiskies. The opening of Braeval brings the total number of Chivas Brothers' sites in Scotland to 31.

Glenlivet, the single malt that started it all, is the flagship brand in the company's growing portfolio of quality Scotch malt whiskies. A global leader in Scotch single malts, the brand achieved sales of over half a million 9 litre cases in 2007.
